Certified with the Boy Scouts of America at Camp Durant, Carthage, NC.
First Aid, CPR, and AED Certified with the Red Cross (2015 - Present)
When I was 15, I decided sign up for lifeguard training for summer camp. For the whole week, instead of going to merit badge classes, I was in the water learning rescue techniques, first aid, CPR, and the importance of life guarding. Over the years I have served as a life guard during summer camps, boy scout swim tests, special events, girl scout summer camps, and at neighborhood pools around central North Carolina. These jobs include both paid experiences and volunteer positions to help my community and my troop. Every 2 years, I returned to renew my certifications at Camp Durant.
I have only had to use my rescue training a handful of times in those years, however the times that I have had to use them, has taught me just how important my responsibilities were and just how much could go wrong if I didn't come to work with complete focus and dedication. Despite the monotony of the majority of the job, it is in those few moments that make the whole thing so important. Besides that, being a lifeguard taught me the value of hard work, constantly practicing techniques with my fellow lifeguards, staying always vigilant on the job, and even in cleaning up and caring for the pool after my shift had ended.
I will take these lessons with me into the workplace, both my newfound value in responsibility and hard work, and in my knowledge of first aid and CPR.
